Nigeria, along with Senegal and Mali, is one of the success stories in West African efforts to stop the spread of Ebola. After an initial outbreak in July 2014 starting with a visitor coming from Liberia, resulting in 20 cases and 8 deaths, WHO declared Nigeria free of Ebola virus transmission on 20 October.
